What is cervical cancer?

Cervical cancers are abnormal cell changes in the cervix. The condition does not cause many symptoms but is diagnosed with cervical screening tests. Early diagnosis can prevent cancer development.

Cervical cancer is a frequent cancer among women. Around 123 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in the UAE.

What are the types of cervical cancer?

Some rare types of cervical cancers include,

  • Glass cell carcinoma
  • Neuroendocrine carcinoma
  • Small cell carcinoma
  • Adenosquamous carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma

It's the standard type of cervical cancer and accounts for about 70 to 80% of the cases. The cancer cells originate in the squamous cells lining the outer surface of the cervix.

Adenocarcinoma

Cancer cells develop in the glandular cells of the cervix, which produce mucus. It's less common but has been increasing in recent years.

What are the causes of cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer begins when the healthy cells in the cervix develop changes in their DNA. HPV, or Human papillomavirus is a virus transmitted during sex and it’s the primary reason for cervical cancer. Some of the other risk factors include a weakened immune system, smoking, having multiple sexual partners, sexually transmitted infections, and long-term use of oral contraceptives.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer?

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding in between periods, after sex, or after menopause.
  • Bloody vaginal discharge with a foul smell
  • Pain during sex or pelvic pain
  • Loss of appetite, fatigue, or weight loss

How do you detect cervical cancer in the early stage?

Screening tests detect cervical cancer and precancerous cells. The tests include,

1.Pap test

During a pap test, a healthcare professional gently collects cells from the cervix and examines them for changes. The test detects cancer cells and precancerous cells that increase the risk of cervical cancer.

2.HPV DNA test

The test detects the possibility of HPV infection that leads to cervical cancer.

How do you diagnose cervical cancer?

If a doctor detects cancer cells during early screening, a colposcopic exam is performed to check for signs of cancer.

During a colposcopy exam, the doctor removes a sample of cervical cells using,

  • Punch biopsy – using a sharp tool to pinch off cells of the cervical tissue.
  • Endocervical curettage – using a curet or thin brush to scrape sample cells from the cervix.

Additional diagnosis tests include,

  • An electrical wire loop or LEEP is a procedure where low-voltage electrified wire collects cell samples.
  • Cone biopsy or conization allows doctors to collect a deeper layer of the cervix cells for testing.
  •

How do you stage cervical cancer?

Imaging tests

X-ray, MRI, CT scan, and PET scan—show the location and size of the cancer.

Visual examination of bladder and rectum

Dr. Marwa will examine your bladder and rectum for signs of cancer.

The stages range from one to four. Stage one indicates that cancer is only in the cervix, whereas stage 4 indicates cervical cancer grown into nearby organs.

Cervical cancer management in Dubai - What are the treatment options?

Surgical treatments
  • A cone biopsy is used to remove a cone-shaped piece of the infected cervical tissue. The rest of the cervix is intact, allowing future pregnancy.
  • Trachelectomy – the procedure removes the cervix and the surrounding tissue. The uterus remains intact, allowing future pregnancy.
  • Hysterectomy – the procedure removes both the cervix and uterus, but it’s impossible for future pregnancy.
